The Africa University community on Saturday the 23rd of February 2019 held an eclectic Inter- Residential (Inter- res) sports competition at the sports grounds situated at the beautiful main campus in Mutare, Zimbabwe. The inter -res competition is one of the annual festivals on the schools’ calendar that are aimed at dissolving the barriers that can be created through residence or hostel affiliations around campus into one family through which the spirit of Ubuntu and team effort thrive.
The halls of residence were grouped to form four houses that included The Rhinos, Cheetahs, Tigers and Eagles who battled it out in various sporting disciplines such as soccer, tug of war, volleyball and for the first time at the Africa University Campus, swimming, marking the first competitive use of the recently finished Olympic grade facility.
In keeping with the theme of unity, the AU staff sports team supported the initiative by fielding teams of their own in Soccer and Netball. The Warden Mrs Virginia Benga, and the Campus Life and Student Development Officer, Mrs Zuweni were integral team leaders in the organization of the event and the student body was sure to offer their thanks and appreciation for the many platforms that are offered by the institution to nurture their talent and come together as a community.
In the words of one of the students,
“The event was a total success in that it managed to give us, the students a chance to mingle beyond the usual conventional spheres, and we are always glad that the university is constantly trying to bring us together and to give us unique and creative entertainment.”
Africa University recognises the importance of sport an integral part of student life and aims to develop the students in various disciplines, providing a platform for students to shine, grow and showcase their sporting skills at events such as this one.
