Africa University Sports Complex - The Dream Begins

25 April 2018
Africa University has commenced construction of a swimming pool that will be utilized as a training ground by the institutions talented swimming team that is already dominating swimming competitions across the country. The installation of the pool is part of the University’s objective of offering to its student’s world class infrastructure and a fulfilling, well- rounded student experience that touches on both academic and extra-curricular activities that focus on mental and physical well- being.

The swimming pool forms a part of a larger plan to boost sporting infrastructure on the university campus with the two university sports fields already having undergone a face-lift with the equipping of state- of the art irrigation systems as well as the laying of turf. All these efforts form part of a larger sporting complex that will house the institutions’ gym, indoor track facilities, courts and sporting auditorium for indoor games.

The construction of the swimming pool is being funded by a $331, 000 gift, given by the Baltimore Washington Conference as a love offering in honor Board Chairman Bishop Marcus Matthews for his leadership and service to Africa University. Bishop Matthews has been known to extol the virtues of wellness and the importance of physical health often seen taking brisk walks around the campus at the break of dawn whenever visiting Mutare.

Estimated to take 90 days to complete, the swimming pool is a welcome addition to the many infrastructural upgrades and extensions that are currently taking place at the University.
